When it comes to “Game of Thrones,” character deaths are constant. It is usually through battles that we bid goodbye to major or minor casts. However, in the history of the HBO drama series, there has only been one resurrection—that of Jon Snow or Aegon Targaryen. This might change in Season 8 given the events in the Season 7 finale. We might see the return of Khal Drogo, Daenerys Targaryen’s long-dead Dothraki husband.

Khal Drogo's death

We last saw Khal Drogo in season 1. Our last memory of the former Dothraki leader is rather painful to recall.

During his fight with Mago, Drogo cut himself with his own blade to show his contempt for the Dothraki. It was a small wound that eventually became infected and poisoned the warlord. Not wanting her husband to die, Daenerys, or Khaleesi, as the Dothraki called her then, commanded Mirri Maz Duur to use magic to save Drogo.

However, the vengeful and evil woman had other plans. She agreed to save him but only to bring him back as a vegetable. Daenerys expected her husband to return to his usual robust self. On the contrary, Khal Drogo was in a catatonic state, and Mirri Maz admitted that she did it on purpose as revenge for the attack on her village. To make it worse, the witch also killed Daenerys’ unborn child as a blood sacrifice for Drogo’s return.

The Dothraki leader died in season 1 episode 10, “Fire and Blood.” Daenerys smothered him because she could no longer bear to see him suffer.

Khal Drogo’s return

However, the events in the season 7 finale of the drama series may have hinted at Khal Drogo’s return. One important scene was that of Jon Snow and Daenerys’ intimate moment on the ship bound for the North.

According to a popular theory, it is likely that Jon Snow impregnates Daenerys after they made love on the boat. When and if this happens, then we might see the return of Khal Drogo in “Game of Thrones” season 8.

Let us recall what Mirri Maz Duur told Daenerys in season 1. When Daenerys asked when the Dothraki leader would return as he was (not in his vegetative state), she answered with a prophecy (see 0:57 in the video below).

However, what she said was not the complete prophecy. In George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire,” she also said, “When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before.” Given how the season 7 finale hinted at the Mother of Dragon’s pregnancy, then it is safe to say that Khal Drogo could return in some way in the drama series. He could appear in Daenerys' vision, as what she saw in the House of the Undying.

It is also worthy to mention that talk about succession and children were prominent in season 7. In the penultimate episode and in the season 7 finale, Daenerys told Jon Snow how she cannot have children. YouTube user Talking Thrones also entertained the possibility that Daenerys gives birth to a girl, who could be the younger queen who takes over Cersei's throne in Maggy the Frog's prophecy.

Interestingly, Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) fuelled speculations about his character’s return to “Game of Thrones” season 8. He was in Belfast a few days ago and reunited with the casts of the drama series. He shared several pictures on his Instagram account. Momoa later reasoned out that he only visited his friends and was not there to shoot.
