The Game of Thrones Season 7 finale finally confirmed the long-time speculation among fans that Jon Snow is not Eddard “Ned” Stark’s bastard son, but his legitimate nephew instead. Bran Stark confirmed with Samwell Tarly that Jon’s real name is Aegon Targaryen, the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. This makes him the true and rightful heir to the Iron Throne and not Daenerys Targaryen, who is his aunt by blood. Recently, a fan-made theory somehow proves Jon’s name, which was given to him by his supposed lord father.

It seems that his name relates to one of the people close to Ned.

Jon Snow’s relation to Ned’s life

“Game of Thrones” fans know that Ned Stark named his three sons – Robb after his best friend, the late King Robert Baratheon, Bran after his brother Brandon Stark, and Rickon after his father. The boys’ names were clearly taken from the people close to Ned, but what about the name Jon Snow? We all know that Snow is the last name of all bastards in the North, but the name Jon appears to be taken from another person that means a lot to Ned – Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie. A fan named duh_metrius took this theory to Reddit.

Jon Arryn’s significance to Ned Stark

According to Reddit user duh_metrius, he has figured it out since the first season of “Game of Thrones,” but he only circulated this online after the Season 7 finale’s confirmation about Jon Snow’s true parentage.

Both Brandon and Ned Stark were Jon Arryn’s wards and raised them as his own sons. He eventually became Ned’s brother-in-law after he married Lysa Tully, Caitlyn Tully’s sister. Both Ned and Jon fought side-by-side during Robert’s uprising against the Targaryens. Jon Arryn was the Hand of the King, but when he died, Robert asked Ned to take over the position so they could rule together.

Jon Snow’s inspiration

“Game of Thrones” fans can also notice that while Jon Snow is growing up, he’s becoming a lot like his lord father Ned Stark. His decisions and choices have been inspired by Ned, where he normally mentions his father each time he makes a decision. Ned knows that Jon Snow is not his trueborn son but he loved him like his own.

Ned is not Jon Arryn’s son but he loved him as if he is his own. Do you notice the similarities between Ned’s relationship with Jon Arryn and how he treated Jon Snow as his own son? Yes, the theory makes sense.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 will be the last and final season of HBO’s hit fantasy epic series. The production starts in October 2017 and it’s expected to premiere sometime in 2018 or in 2019.
