Another weekend at the box office and there is a new number one as the summer blockbusters keep coming out. 'War For The Planet Of The Apes' went ape and dethroned 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' at the top of the box office. Besides taking the top spot, the movie is also getting the best reviews so far compared to its predecessors.

Apes have once again conquered the box office

The third movie in the reboot of the franchise, 'War for the Planet of the Apes' has taken the number one spot at the domestic box office with a successful opening weekend. 20th Century Fox and Cherin Entertainment's movie saw a three-day opening weekend that was right in line with what studio and independent projections had the movie making.

Those estimates were between $55 to $60 million, with the movie taking in $56.5 million at the domestic box office from 4,022 screens.

This is significantly lower than its predecessor, 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes', which made $72 million but higher than 2011's 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' at $54.6 million. It is considered an ok amount by the industry, as this has been a rough summer for most non-superhero movies.

'War' will likely make its money overseas

Overseas the movie took in about $46 million, giving it a total worldwide weekend haul of $102.5 million against a reported production budget of $150 million dollars. This is where 'War for the Planet of the Apes' is expected to make most of its money at the box office, as 'Rise' (63%) and 'Dawn' (70%) both did.

The film premiered in 46 total markets overseas, including four major ones. However, it did not win the overseas box office, as 'Spider-man' took in a total of $72.3 million from 63 markets.

Strong reviews for a blockbuster

Just like last week's 'Spider-man' movie or this summer's 'Wonder Woman' movie, 'War for the Planet of the Apes' has gotten unusually high reviews and praise for an AAA blockbuster movie.

The film has an A- on Cinemascore, which is the same score as its two predecessors. On 'rotten tomatoes' the movie currently has a 95% certified fresh score from 202 critic reviews and an 88% audience score from 34,366 user reviews.

This made it the best in the reboot trilogy yet as 'Rise' had a critic score of 81% and a user score of 77%, while 'Dawn' had a critic score of 90% and a user score of 88%. On 'Metacritic' the movie has gardened an 83 rating from 48 critic reviews and an 8.6 rating from 144 user reviews.
