One of the next Marvel Netflix series will be "The Punisher," based on the character introduced in the second season of "Daredevil." One director who is working on "The Punisher" is Stephen Surjik, a man who also worked on all four of the other Netflix Marvel properties. However, according to Surjik, "The Punisher" is different than all the other Netflix shows about Marvel characters.
"The Punisher"
Netflix introduced The Punisher to their Marvel world on the second season of "Daredevil." This is also the fourth introduction to The Punisher in entertainment.
There have been three movies, the first in the '80s with Dolph Lundgren in the role of the antihero and the second two starring Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson.
When it comes to the Marvel Netflix world, Jon Bernthal (Shane from "The Walking Dead") stars as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. For fans of the comics and previous movies, The Punisher is someone who has given up on the court system to do their jobs and kills criminals - something that separates him from other superheroes.
Differences from other Netflix Marvel series
Stephen Surjik has a non-disclosure agreement and is not allowed to say too much about the storyline in "The Punisher" itself. With that said, he admitted to directing the finale of "The Punisher's" first season and he said that it is in post-production.
While he can't talk about the episode, he did say that "it's really good."
As for what makes it different than the other Marvel Netflix series, Surjik said that it is more of an adult drama than a superhero series. The Punisher has no superpowers and that is another difference because Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist all have powers of one sort or another.
Also, while Daredevil's first season saw Matt Murdoch willing to kill and do whatever it took to stop villains, that was his character arc. When it comes to The Punisher, there is no character arc where he learns not to kill. Surjik said that The Punisher is simply based on vengeance. His approach to the tragedies in his life is different than characters on the other Marvel Netflix shows.
"The Punisher" premiere
"The Punisher" has no set release date yet for Netflix. However, the Marvel series will come out sometime this fall. Jon Bernthal will return to the role as Frank Castle/The Punisher. Other actors in the show include Ben Barnes, Michael Nathanson, Paul Schulze, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Daniel Webber, and Amber Rose Revah.
