Marvel just announced a new addition to "Ant-Man" follow-up movie cast - Michelle Pfeiffer. The studio revealed at San Diego Comic Con that the actress will be portrayed by Janet Van Dyne - the mother of Hope.

The Wasp in the first movie

In the 2015 Ant-Man" movie, we briefly saw the character Janet Van Dyke as the original owner of "The Wasp" suit. She is shown briefly in a flashback as disappearing from her husband and daughter's life after going "subatomic" in an attempt to disarm a dangerous missile.

She was presumed lost from this point on - but clearly, she is going to making a return.

Hank Pym (Micheal Douglas) tried to protect his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) from assuming The Wasp identity. However, after working alongside Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hope eventually learns the full truth about her mother's disappearance. At the end of the first movie in a post-credits scene, she is officially introduced to the suit.

A comic-book veteran

While we haven't seen Michelle Pheiffer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have seen her in a DC movie. She played Catwoman during the Micheal Keaton era.

In fact, Vulture recently praised her portrayal of the famous character, naming her the "the best superhero movie villain" even though it's been 25 years since "Batman Returns".

The actress has been nominated for three Oscars, and is also well-known for her role Elivara Hancock in the 1980's film "Scarface." In more recent years, you might recognize her as Lamia in "Stardust" or Velma Von Tussle in "Hairspray."

What else to expect

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding this movie, as we aren't expecting a release until July 2018. However, here is what we do know - Director Peyton Reed will be returning for the sequel, and recently joined Instagram to post cryptic updates and clues which included scenes from the original comic book.

The title alone tells us that this movie will be a shared spotlight between Ant-Man and The Wasp this time around, we just don't know what's bring them together.

Hannah John-Kamen (of "Black Mirror" and "Game of Thrones" ) was another recent addition to the cast. We do not know what her role will be, as both the actress and the studio have had tight lips about it. It was rumored that perhaps Michael Douglas, Michael Peña, and David Dastmalchian are all set to return. The movie is going to be filming in Atlanta, Georgia and will be released on July 8, 2018.
