With the fast approaching release of “Avengers: Infinity War” on April 25, 2018, fans are beginning to speculate what else are the surprises waiting in the upcoming Phase 4 of Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the recent concept art revealing the inclusion of the Skrulls in the upcoming “Captain Marvel” film and Russo brothers’ confirmation that Danvers will not appear in the highly anticipated 3rd Avengers film, the likelihood of the Secret Invasion storyline to be in Phase 4 is getting pretty high.

‘The Secret Invasion’

“The Secret Invasion” was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu.

It is basically Marvel’s take on the idea of the film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978). After the Kree/Skrull War storyline, the secret society of superheroes that includes Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Professor X, Doctor Strange, Namor, and Black Bolt decided to pay Skrull’s planet a visit to warn them for attacking Earth again. However, the shape-shifting aliens didn’t appreciate the idea and ended up capturing the heroes. The Skrulls experimented on them before they managed to escape.

Skrulls, believing that Earth is rightfully theirs, began their invasion.

With the knowledge they gained from experimenting on the superheroes, they managed to sneak in the planet without getting noticed. They captured a few more superheroes during the invasion and eventually infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.

After the spreading news regarding the invasion, mistrust grew. In the end, the President of the United States decided to scrape S.H.I.E.L.D.

altogether and created H.A.M.M.E.R., a new organization helmed by Norman Osborn. In this new organization, Osborn formed his secret society of supervillains that includes Doctor Doom, Emma Frost, and Loki. This storyline led to the Dark Reign arc.

Kree/Skrull War in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

As we all know, the upcoming “Captain Marvel” film will be set during the 1990s.

And since Danvers’ storyline will involve the Skrulls, this could imply that Marvel is going to lay out the shape-shifting alien species’ involvement in the bigger picture.

Marvel is yet to confirm the official explanation of how Carol Danvers will gain her superpowers in the film. However, Kevin Feige has finally confirmed that the upcoming "Captain Marvel" film will be the MCU’s version of the Kree/Skrull war. Basing on this information, Danvers will most likely receive her superpowers from the Kree. Another thing to note is that as of now, Kree is already hugely involved in a few existing storylines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Inhumans.”

“Captain Marvel” is set to hit the theaters on March 8, 2019. “Avengers: Infinity War” is scheduled to release on April 25, 2018.
