Hey, "The Originals" fans. We have some great news to tell you! You can expect to see your favorite show return for a brand new season 5. The CW gave the series a pretty late renewal, but that's better than no renewal at all. According to TV Line, the show's 5th season will begin at some point in 2018. There won't be full season of "The Originals" for the second time after starting off with full seasons for the first three go-arounds.

How many episodes?

There were 13 episodes in season 4, but CW has yet to be revealed how many episodes will air on season 5.

We do know it won't be a full season. This renewal news means fans will see new spoilers, cast interviews, promo clips released in the months ahead. So, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for all of that.

Possible Caroline Forbes appearance

Thanks to TV Guide, we do have a possible season 5 spoiler teaser. There is speculation that we could possibly see Caroline Forbes, from its sister show "The Vampire Diaries," arrive to pursue some sort of relationship with Klaus.

Klaus made a big donation to Caroline's school for supernatural children in "The Vampire Diaries" series finale. They say Caroline's portrayer Candice King's schedule is free and that it may not be a coincidence.

The show's creator, Julie Plec has said that a Caroline crossover could happen some day.

Right now, it's all pretty speculative. However, don't be surprised if we hear more about this as the new season draws near.

Additionally, TV Line said that Julie is going to take over the showrunner role from Michael Narducci. Leslie Morgenstern is going to executive produce it. She was previously an executive producer for "The Vampire Diaries."

Very low numbers

Let's look at the ratings numbers for season 4.

It started off with a very low 0.35 score for the 18-49 age demographics. That was down a negative 10.26 percent from the season 3 finale. The premiere episode brought in 1.04 million viewers in the United States. That was actually up a positive 17.00 percent from the season 3 finale. The worldwide audience for the premiere was 1.64 million.

The USA viewership numbers fluctuated throughout the season. Often times, it fell below the 1 million mark. So, it's no wonder it took the CW so long to give it a renewal.

Episode 12 that aired on June 16 brought in 1.01 million watchers. It scored a 0.30 demo score. We may see season 5 be the end of this series if the numbers keep dropping further. Stay tuned.
