Fans of the FOX comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" collectively sighed a breath of relief when in May, Variety announced that it has been renewed for a fifth season. The series dodged the cancel bullet after being on the bubble for quite a while, but the final episodes did deliver what fans always loved the show—heart, soul, and a twist.

Last season, viewers saw Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) get shipped off to Miami under a witness protection program. The two sorted things out and made it back to the Nine-Nine, only to be burdened by the fact that the squad was moved to the night shift.

These challenges seemed small to what they're now facing: Jake and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) are heading to jail after being framed by a dirty cop. What becomes of Peralta and Diaz will finally come to light in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" Season 5, which premiere was set for September 26.

Peralta and Diaz most likely going to jail

The Dan Goor and Michael Schur-created series has always placed itself in tricky situations especially towards the end of the season, but admittedly, this is one difficult case to crack. Co-creator Dan Goor spoke with Entertainment Weekly in May and admitted that this new story arc has definitely challenged them. He explained, "of all the cliffhangers we’ve had—of all the big game-changers we’ve put Jake in the Nine-Nine through—this one feels like the most difficult to extricate ourselves from."

Goor added that if the Peralta and Diaz do find themselves in jail, their genders would force them into different prisons, and ultimately, different stories.

Nonetheless, Goor said that both Andy Samberg and Rosa Diaz were on board with the rather interesting new storyline in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"

Ryan Philippe's character is the father of Gina's baby

It would be interesting to find out how the rest of the squad fare without Peralta and Diaz in the precinct. For Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), she's carrying Charles Boyle's cousin's baby and would be due in a few months.

Dan Goor told Entertainment Weekly that in the early parts of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 5, Peretti's character may be on maternity leave, as the actress is pregnant in real life.

It's also uncertain whether her baby daddy, played by Ryan Phillippe, will return. Nonetheless, Goor said that it's entirely dependent on his schedule, whether he can make it back or not. "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 5 will premiere on FOX on September 26.
