"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" proved to be yet another massive hit, earning $750 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. A sequel to the James Gunn-directed flick has already been given the green light by Marvel, and "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" will see Gunn returning to write and direct the film. While some might think that production is going straight back to work for a 2020 release, right now, development has been put on hold because they have to wait on the conclusion of "Infinity War" and the untitled "Avengers 4" movie, Screen Rant reported.

'Guardians 3' will be set after 'Infinity War' and 'Avengers 4'

Earlier this month, Collider reported that James Gunn revealed how the third film will be set after the events of "Infinity War" and the untitled "Avengers 4" film. He explained that all of the previous MCU movies were all in preparation for "Infinity War" and "Avengers 4," but "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" will "conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians...and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. He added that he's working together with Kevin Feige to make sure that the upcoming Marvel films are "as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far," and promised that they'll do it "with integrity and love and respect for the characters."

Sean Gunn talks about the future of the Guardians

Sean Gunn, James Gunn's brother -- who plays the Ravager Kraglin and is also the stand-in for Rocket Raccoon on set -- recently spoke to Fan Fest to talk about how "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" is coming along, despite having been put on hold for "Infinity War" and "Avengers 4." He explained that James Gunn is serving as one of the producers of "Infinity War," and that they are waiting to "see where everything lands there that’s going to have some bearing on what happens with the Guardians."

He explained that the events of the third film will be dependent on what goes on in the upcoming "Infinity War," but there are several ideas already on the table for the ragtag team of superheroes.

There's no release date set for the third film at the moment.

"Avengers: Infinity War" will arrive on May 4, 2018, and is set to bring back stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Samuel L. Jackson, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Benicio del Toro, Tom Holland, and Anthony Mackie.
