"Married At First Sight" couple Tom Wilson and Lillian Vilchez are officially putting an end to their 14-month marriage. In a joint statement, the two announced on Wednesday that they have decided to file for a divorce. They told People that this decision is a difficult one because they still "love each other very much."

From lovers to best friends

The now ex-couple also confirmed the news on their separate social media accounts. On his Instagram page, Tom remained optimistic despite the heartbreaking news. He wrote that with the conclusion of their marriage, a "beautiful friendship has started."

"Love her and care about her happiness.

We're still team Tillian!" Tom wrote in the caption.

As for Lillian, she posted a lengthy explanation she penned for her fans. She hinted that despite being "madly in love" with Tom, she felt he wasn't fully committed to doing the work marriage entails. She tagged her ex-husband in the post with a shoutout saying she still loves him.

Rumors of their split have been going on for quite a while. Tom even posted a baffling poll on Twitter early this week, asking fans what they think was the hardest part about a marriage. Results showed it was "growing apart," the same reason they cited for their divorce.

According to a source, Tom and Lillian tried their hardest to make their unconventional marriage work.

But in the end, they just realized that they were heading in "different directions."

Does 'Married at First Sight' brew failed marriages?

Tom and Lillian were part of "Married at First Sight" Season 4 last year. Tom, 29, is a yacht interior specialist and Lillian is a 25-year-old real estate agent. As part of the show's experiment, the two got said "I do" on the same day they first saw each other.

Despite their issues during filming, Tom and Lilly decided to stay married by the end of the season. For the season finale, Tom even gave Lillian a diamond ring to symbolize his commitment.

Another couple from their season, Nick Pendergrast and Sonia Granados, also opted to stay married but announced their split last March.

After four complete seasons, MAFS produced seven couples who chose marriage over divorce. Only two of those couples remain together so far. Interestingly, these two couples are both from the reality show's first season.

Jason Carrion and Monet Bell from Season 1 are still married. Dough Hehner and Jamie Otis are also very much together and are even expecting their first child.

"Married at First Sight" Season 5 is currently airing on Lifetime.
