Game of Thrones” season 7, is on its way to hit the small screen soon. However, fans need not feel sad about the upcoming end of the series in 2018. The good news is, there are five possible spin-offs already lined up.

Five potential spin-offs

George R.R. Martin, the man behind the famed “Game of Thrones,” revealed that they are currently developing the potential spin-offs at HBO. Emphasizing the word potential, that means it is uncertain if these potential spin-offs will eventually turn out to be a show. According to the writer, the number of spin-offs is just enough because too many would create another franchise.

Originally, they only had four spin-offs in the making with writers Mark Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland and Carly Wray collaborating with the Martin. The author was regularly visited by the spin-off writers to discuss their ideas and the details about the history of Westeros and The World of Ice & Fire and The Lands of Ice and Fire. When this news first came out the fans were very excited but they must be even more thrilled with the confirmation from Martin regarding the 5th potential spin-off. However, the author did not reveal who the 5th writer is as the negotiation between him and HBO is not yet final. Instead, he just described the newest member of their writing circle as a fine guy and one who also possess the same love for Westeros.

Spin-offs theories

Fans have their own assumptions about the potential story of the “Game of Thrones” spin-offs. Two of their suggested storylines focus on “Dunk and Egg” and “Robert’s Rebellion.” Unfortunately, Martin discarded these possibilities. On the other hand, “Dunk and Egg” might be considered in the future but as of the moment he just published three novellas and he has seven or eight or even ten more stories he wants to write.

The author admitted that he is much slower when writing compared to what is shown on the television, which airs the story ahead of the books. This is not what he wants to happen with “Dunk and Egg.” Instead, he wants to finish telling the story through his books before making it a television show. Regarding the possible story that the fans see in “Robert’s Rebellion,” it is that moment which provoked the conflict in the current story.

What to expect from the spin-offs

The potential spin-offs of the series will not follow the traditional spin-offs or sequels. Instead, it will be all prequels of the current story shown on TV. Martin called them successor shows. The characters in the series now will no longer continue their quests and there is a possibility that Westeros is not the only place where the story revolves. It will be about the “secondary universe” of Westeros or even the world beyond it just as he did in “A Song Of Ice And Fire.” Martin created a pretty much bigger world where it can be stretched to include many more stories. The premiere of “Game of Thrones” season 7 airs on HBO, July 16, 9pm.
