'Game of Thrones' fans may have to wait a little longer for episode 1 of season 7 as new reports reveal a July 2017 release date for the series. In a recent interview with GoT cast Liam Cunningham, the veteran actor revealed that the show's air date has been pushed back a few months later to the third quarter of the year. Fans need not be dismayed though, as the actor confirmed that something "special" is in store for the premiere.

Rumors about the ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 release date have been swirling ever since the last episode of season 6 ended.

Previous seasons of the show usually air on April, with season 3 airing a day earlier on March 31, 2013, so many fans had expected a similar air date for the upcoming episodes. However, reports have surfaced left and right that airing has bumped to later dates, and now a new update suggests it will release on the third quarter of the year.

‘Game of Thrones’ HBO air date set on July 2017

Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos in the hit TV series, has recently shared interesting bits about the upcoming final seasons of the HBO hit. Speaking with Irish news source, Independent, the actor said the show will probably premiere its seventh season on July.

"I've been disappointing various people around the world because it was meant to come out in April,” the Dublin star shared.

“It's July now, I think.”

While this may upset many supporters of the show, the ‘Clash of the Titans’ actor clarified that it is worth the wait. "There's going to be a launch and something special happening this year for the premiere. The bad news is, there will only be seven episodes and the final season starts again as far as I know in September.”

Should Cunningham’s statement be true, then 'Game of Thrones' final season would be airing just a few months after episode 7 of season 7.

The TV show could also end before Christmas, after running for six years.

More ‘Game of Thrones’ Spoilers

Nothing concrete has been spilled about season 7, however, a few clues cam help fans imagine what ‘Game of Thrones’ has in store for its final episodes. First on the list of clues would be the returning casts. Kit Harington’s Jon Snow will be returning to the show, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion and Maisie Williams as Arya are also set season 7.

Lena Headley (Cersei), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Sophie Turner (Sansa) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime) are expected to return as well.

Beyond season 7, though, is another story. According to The Sun, Harington, Dinklage, Headley, Clarke and Coster-Waldau are optioned for ‘Game of Thrones’ season 8 with no confirmation of a return in the finale. While fans could probably predict their return, GoT is also known for killing off fan-favorite characters, Jon Snow dying again isn’t totally off the possible plot twists.
