Tarek and Christina El Moussa announced their split nearly one year ago and Christina is now speaking out about the reason for her divorce. The "Flip or Flop" stars separated in May 2016 after a domestic incident occurred in their home. Christina recognizes that she and Tarek went through a lot in the years leading up to his incident and says that she and Tarek had issues just "like any couple."

'Flip Or Flop' premieres along with a host of challenges

In 2013, Tarek and Christina El Moussa launched their television show "Flip Or Flop" on HGTV. While getting caught up in the whole work-meets-reality-television lifestyle, the couple focused on their careers and their lives were thrust into the limelight.

A short time later, Tarek El Moussa was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to undergo radiation. Having a family member go through something as traumatizing as cancer (or any other potentially life-threatening or life-altering disease) is beyond stressful.

On top of that, Christina and Tarek decided that they wanted to expand their family. However, it wasn't so easy. Christina had a very hard time getting pregnant and she actually did IVF a couple of times before suffering a miscarriage in 2014, adding to the emotional roller coaster that the two had been on at that time.

When Christina did get pregnant, she returned to work just four weeks after welcoming the couple's first child.

"It was too soon for me.

I was overwhelmed. The tension between me and Tarek was high," she explained.

'A weight has been lifted'

After much back and forth, Tarek and Christina El Moussa decided that separating would be the best option for them. Their communication levels were very low and they were both extremely stressed out -- so much so that they couldn't really function as a unit anymore.

Christina says that the ultimate decision to split from Tarek was like a "weight lifted off [her]."The former couple has released a statement saying that they will continue their professional relationship and that they will work together to raise their children, Taylor, 6, and Braydon, 18 months.
