While "The Vampire Diaries" fans know that Elena Gilbert will return to the show for the Series Finale, others want to know about Elena's doppelganger. Katherine hasn't been seen since the end of season 5 when she was presumably dragged to hell. Considering the current storyline, now would be the perfect time to bring her back. The question is whether something like that is going to happen.

Julie Plec answers 'The Vampire Diaries' questions

The showrunner of "TVD" took to Twitter for a spur of the moment Q&A session. Fans were encouraged to ask their questions and they received mostly yes or no answers.

One fan wanted to know whether Katherine would return to the show for the series finale, and Plec answered yes. What isn't currently clear is how Katherine will return -- and whether just the character will be mentioned with archive footage used or whether Nina Dobrev will dress up as the manipulative vampire doppelganger.

Not the only character returning

Katherine would not be the only character returning for the series finale. There are already rumors that Jeremy Gilbert, played by Steven R. McQueen will make a reappearance. This doesn't sound that odd considering Elena is going to be back. Jeremy has been off hunting vampires and he will likely return knowing that he gets to see his sister alive again.

Tyler Lockwood and Vicki Donovan have also been confirmed for a return, while David Anders shared photos of him at "TVD" set hinting that John Gilbert will return.

It makes sense for many of the characters to return considering the hell storyline. Kai has already come back, sharing how it happened last week. Characters like John Gilbert and Katherine Pierce are likely in hell for the evil things that they did, even if they were in the name of survival.

They may return to help Bonnie, Damon, Stefan, and Caroline get rid of Cade for good and close off hell.

"The Vampire Diaries" is set to be emotional, as Paul Wesley has already said he cried filming the last scenes. It will air on March 10, 2017 on the CW.
