The 2017 People's Choice Awards hosted by comedian Joel McHale aired on CBS on Wednesday night. It was the 43rd annual event where Celebrities came together to be honored for the work they had done in their careers in 2016. The ceremony (held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles) was filled with Hollywood's best in television, film, music, and social media.

The People's Choice Awards rules are quite different from the Oscars, the Grammys, or the Golden Globes. The People's Choice Award is just what it says. It is the people's choice -- where the fans vote on who they believe should be the winners.

The nominees were announced on November 15, 2016, so people had some time to think about who they wanted to win.

Biggest winners

Ellen DeGeneres won big and made history. She broke her own record by winning her 20th award, more than anyone else. DeGeneres became the most-decorated winner in history with 20 awards to her name. Her 20 People's Choice Awards will go along with her 29 Emmys. It is safe to say, she is like the Michael Phelps of pop culture. The 58-year-old comedian and television host was nominated for three awards, and she won all three. She won for Favorite Animated Movie Voice in "Finding Dory," Favorite Daytime TV Host, and Favorite Comedic Collaboration with Britney Spears.

Other winners

Even though Britney Spears took home four awards, her total didn't come close to Ellen's. To date, the 35-year-old pop culture icon has had a total of 15 nominations but only six wins.

Jennifer Lopez has been nominated seven times, and finally won her first People's Choice Award for Favorite Crime Drama TV Actress for "Shades of Blue."

Blake Shelton won awards for Favorite Male Country Artist and Favorite Album. Johnny Depp was given the Favorite Movie Icon Award. In total, there were 64 categories from last night's event. Whether or not you are happy with the results of the event, the people have certainly spoken.
