The recent mass shooting attack in Texas is all that everyone is talking about. Some people are of the belief that the problem with these shootings is a ‘mental health’ issue, while others believe that stricter gun control laws need to be enacted in order to try and curb these instances of gun violence.

This writer believes that all interested stakeholders need to sit down and have an open and honest discussion about the impact that these shootings are having on an already charged societal landscape. The reality is that with the ‘take the knee’ protests in the NFL and the instances of ‘alleged’ police brutality that have been sweeping the nation, there needs to be a calm meeting of the minds to address the issue.

When will enough be enough?

When it was reported that a man had walked into a Texas church and started shooting, the emotion that was experienced was shock. Shock that yet again, someone was able to get a gun too easily and walk into a public place, or in this case a house of worship and just end the lives of innocent people.

One of the first reactions of the GOP was ‘our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Texas’ and that was all well and good but what are the GOP (they control the senate and the house) going to do to ensure that this type of thing doesn’t happen yet again?

What are the GOP and the Democrats going to do?

If we are to believe the words of the President, who has said “If you did what you're suggesting, there would have been no difference three days ago and you might not have had that very brave person who happens to have a gun or a rifle in his trunk.”

It is all well and good to say that if that good Samaritan hadn’t had his gun the death toll would have been higher – who knows, he just might have been right, however, if there were a deeper vetting process involved for even getting a hand gun, then maybe the mass shooting would not have taken place at all.

This writer is reminded of a saying – ‘God helps those who help themselves,' and this little saying means that if you want divine assistance for a situation that you are going through, then you need to take that first step towards changing the circumstances of the situation that you are in. In too many cases of these shootings over the past few years, the response has been 'our thoughts and prayers.' When will the powers that be actually try to amend the law to actually protect rather than hurt the public that elected them in the first place? Let's wait and see!
