While speaking to a local Columbus, Ohio television station recently, Indiana Governor Mike Pence was asked one soul searching question. #News anchor, Scott Light, of WBNS-10TV wanted to know how would Pence respond to an 11-year-old girl who toured the station and said that the words of #Donald Trump made her feel ashamed. The staff added that the child’s comments were completely unsolicited. According to Light, the little girl said that when she hears those words and looks in the mirror, she feels bad about herself.
Surprisingly, Pence chose to respond in a fashion typical of his campaign. Pivot. The governor, who is a Christian, said, "Well, I would say to any one of my kids and any children in this country that Donald Trump and I are committed to a safer and more prosperous future for their family. The weak and feckless foreign policy that Hillary Clinton promises to continue has literally caused wider areas of the world to spin apart.”
That’s right. The soothing answer for a little girl whose self-worth had been diminished by his running mate’s rhetoric was nestled somewhere inside foreign policy.
Pivot, distract and pivot some more
Pence went into further details about the rise of terrorist threats since clearly sexual threats and verbal abuse are low on the totem pole and undeserving of being addressed. Mike Pence did say that if he and Donald Trump were given the opportunity to serve in the White House, they will work to make America stronger, safer and more prosperous. So there. Hope she feels better even though this is obviously a talking point for voting adults to hear. Needless to say, folks had a field day criticizing Pence in the Twittersphere.
Children may be resilient, but they are not stupid
That little girl deserved better than to be shucked or jived or dismissed. More importantly, she nor any other child should hear insults from grownups, making them feel ashamed. And when they ask a question that affects them so deeply, they deserve an answer relevant to their question. Sleep well. Children are watching. #Election 2016
