It’s an exciting week for tennis heading into the US Open as stars converge at the Western & Southern Open, held from August 12 to 20 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, OH.

The top seeds in the event are Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova, who also won the women’s crown last year. Marin Cilic won the men’s crown last year but he withdrew due to an abductor injury before the tournament began.

Nadal is currently ranked No. 2 in the world while Roger Federer was the second seed in the event that offers almost $1 million to the men’s champion.

The other seeded players in the event were Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Goffin, Tomas Berdych, Pablo Carreño Busta, Roberto Bautista Agut, Jack Sock, John Isner, Sam Querrey and Gilles Muller.

On the women’s side, Simona Halep of Romania was the second seed while Germany’s Angelique Kerber was installed as the third seed in the tournament that offers $522,450 to the women’s titlist.

The other women’s seeded players in the event are Garbiñe Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, Caroline Wozniacki, Johanna Konta, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams, Agnieszka Radwańska, Dominika Cibulková, Jeļena Ostapenko, Kristina Mladenovic , Petra Kvitova, Anastasija Sevastova and Madison Keys.

About the tournament

The tournament is played annually in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason, Ohio, USA. The event started on September 18, 1899, and is today the oldest tennis tournament in the United States still played in its original city.

The men's event is one of nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour. The women's event is a $2 million Premier 5 event for the WTA and is the only WTA event held in the American Midwest.

The competition is played on outdoor hard courts.

Because of its sponsorship by the Western & Southern Financial Group, the official name of the event is the Western & Southern Open."

Past champions include such all-time greats as Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Nadal, and Federer. The Western & Southern Open is part of the US Open Series.

After this event, the Winston-Salem Open will be played at Winston-Salem, North Carolina from August 20 to August 26. It will serve as a warm-up event for the US Open, which will kick off from August 28 to September 10 in New York. The US Open offers a total cash pot of $24,193,400.
