Reality television is a genre of television show based on real life. We can speak of a reality show whenever the events portrayed in it are the result of reality and the subjects of the story are real people and not fictional characters.

Reality television achieved prominence in the early 2000s with the success of shows like "Survivor" and "Big Brother". Later on, singing competition franchises like "Idols," "Got Talent" and "The X Factor" had massive global success.

1.One for every taste

With the huge ratings success of reality shows around the world, the genre began to give rise to a myriad of subcategories. Soap-opera style shows, like "Real Housewives" and "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County," celebrities everyday life show, like "The Osbournes," "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" and "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." Professional activities shows, like "American Chopper," "Miami Ink" and "Deadliest Catch." Outdoor survival shows, like "Survivorman," "Man vs. Wild" and "Naked and Afraid."

But without a doubt, the format in which reality shows have been most successful are the so-called reality game shows. Some good examples of this sub-genre that have made huge success are "Dancing with the Stars," "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?," "American Gladiators," "The Biggest Loser" and "The Apprentice."

Another very successful sub-genre are the dating-based competition shows. Some good examples are "The Bachelor," its spin-off "The Bachelorette" and "Temptation Island".

2.Criticism

Since becoming globally popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, reality television has been the target of numerous criticisms, both from television critics and from the viewers.

Among the numerous criticisms, many argue that reality shows present an artificial, or even staged, reality.

Many programs are accused by the audience of manipulating the results, favoring some participants in the editions that go on air, trying to create a narrative that favors them to reach the grand prize.

Another very common criticism is that reality shows end up making famous people who have no talent whatsoever and have little to add to society.

Anyway, reality shows are undoubtedly part of the daily lives of millions of people around the world and are one of the main types of entertainment available in the programming grid of television broadcasters and streaming services.
