With the United States government now shut down, both Democrats and Republicans have been quick to blame the opposing party. As Donald Trump continues to put the blame on the doorstep of the Democratic Party, one of the president's sons made sure to double down.

As the clock ticked closer to midnight last Friday, it became apparent that a government shutdown would become a reality. Democrats wanted an extension for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to allow protection for illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

In return, Donald Trump and the Republican Party took a hard-line stance in receiving funding for a border wall and increased border security. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that he was willing to work with the GOP, even putting the border wall open for discussion, but said that the president balked at the idea and walked away from the discussion. In the 48 hours since the shutdown, the blame game has been taking place in Washington, D.C. and across social media, as partisan politics has once again controlled the narrative. As seen in a tweet on January 21, Donald Trump Jr. promoted the idea that Democrats want to "destroy" the country at the expense of his father.

promoted an op-ed article from The Hill written by Tommy Hicks Jr. "Schumer's shutdown reveals: Democrats will destroy America just to spite Trump," Don. Jr tweeted out, which was proceeded by a long list of re-tweets blaming Democrats for the shutdown and absolving his father of any wrong doing. The younger Trump's tweet comes as he has also promoted the latest conservative talking point about a classified Department of Justice memo that many on the political right claim will prove that the Obama administration wrongfully spied on the president during the 2016 election.

In response to Donald Trump Jr's tweet, those who are critical of the administration made sure to hit back. "Or that Trump will destroy America to spite the Democrats," one tweet read.

"Trump will destroy the poorest people in America just to become richer," another tweet added.

"Hey Diaper Don remember when daddy trump said the President is responsible? Bad try but its the Trump Shutdown," a Twitter user wrote. "Trump president. Trump government. Trump shutdown. It’s that easy. Oh. And blame the Democrats for everything," a follow-up tweet noted.

"President's has control of house and senate.

First government shutdown in history when a president has control. We don't have a true leader now," an additional tweet stated. "When the Trump Organization can no longer launder money- it will cease to exist," one social media user posted.
