A 64-year-old lone shooter opened fire into a crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip. It had been a three-day event, and country music star Jason Aldean was closing out the festival on the last day when the gunman shot into a crowd of about 22,000 people. Because the crowd was so big, it was easy for the shooter to kill 59 innocent people and to wound 527 others.

As of now, all except three of the victims have been identified.

The festival had been an annual event since 2014 without any incident until last Sunday. People from all over the world have reached out to the community, and hundreds of people have donated blood and other aid. A GoFundMe page was set up, and within 24 hours it showed over $3.7 million had surpassed the original goal of $2 million. The campaign has raised over $8 million, and the money is still coming in to provide relief and financial support to the victims and their families.

Timeline of shooting

The shooter had rented a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and had been there since last Thursday, September 28. He had broken the glass in two windows so he could shoot through them.

When the shooting first started at 10:08 p.m., many people at the festival thought it was fireworks. When then the gunfire continued over a ten-minute period, they realized the worst was happening.

By 10:25 PM the police had given orders to lock down all the rooms in the hotel. When officers broke down the shooter's door with explosives at 11:21 p.m., they found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the room were 23 different kinds weapons, such as AR-15-style, AK-47-style and .308 caliber rifles and one handgun. ATF special agent Jill Schneider confirmed that 12 weapons had been modified to be fully automatic. Two of the rifles were mounted on tripods. The weapons had been carried into the hotel room in 13 different suitcases.

Another 19 guns were found at the shooter's house.

A father spoke out on the news that his 13-month-old baby was alone in a room three doors from the shooter. The nanny was across the hall in a separate room. The police had to break down the door to get the baby since all the rooms were locked down.

Investigation

Police are investigating the possibility that the shooter may have planned to attack the "Life Is Beautiful" three-day festival held in Las Vegas from September 22 to September 24 where Chance The Rapper was performing. The room the shooter wanted at a nearby hotel was booked at the time.
