The southern Dallas road where 52-year-old Gorge Spears abandoned a female dog is known for regular incidents of that nature. However, this is the first time someone dumping their pet was caught on surveillance camera. Spears is now facing Animal cruelty charges after he handed himself to police, even though he told reporters from the jail that doesn’t believe leaving the dog was a cruel act.

Camera installed by Dallas Marshal’s office at request of SPCA

The Dallas Marshal’s office recently installed the camera in the area around Teagarden Road and Dowdy Ferry Road in Dallas.

The Spca Of Texas said this was instrumental in catching an alleged animal cruelty act on video for the very first time. In a statement on their Facebook page, they wrote that the arrest marks the start of a close relationship between the Dallas Marshal’s Office and the SPCA of Texas in cracking down on animal cruelty in both that area and other surrounding areas where pets are being abandoned.

Video clearly shows man abandoning his dog

As reported by WHAS 11, the video footage, captured on August 4, clearly shows Spears climbing out of his Infiniti sedan car and pulling a black and white dog from the vehicle. He then drives off, abandoning the one-year-old mixed breed dog to the elements. The female dog was found the following day and was taken by Dallas Animal Services on August 6.

The dog, who goes by the name Claira-Belle, was then taken to the SPCA of Texas.

After turning himself into Dallas police on September 11, an arrest warrant was filed against Spears, following his confession that he had dumped the dog. However, Spears claimed that it wasn’t an act of animal cruelty and that he was helping his sister, who was having problems caring for the dog.

Man's reasoning why it wasn't animal cruelty

As reported by WFAA, Spears said in the interview that if he had taken the dog to the pound and no one adopted her, she would have been euthanized. He said that by dumping her, he was allowing the dog to continue her life and meet up with other stray dogs. However, the SPCA and the Dallas Marshal’s office rightfully disagree with his claims and he will now face animal cruelty charges for his actions.

Part of the interview with Spears at the jail can be heard in the video included here.

According to a post on the SPCA of Texas’ Facebook post, Claira-Belle was adopted by a lady of the name of Reagan on September 9 and is now doing very well.
