Over the last week, one of the most controversial issues has been centered around the latest attempt by Republicans to replace the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare." After Donald Trump sent several tweets in support of the new bill, critics across social media instantly firing back.

Trump on Twitter

Ever since former President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law back in January 2010, it's become the number one goal of the Republican Party to erase it. For the duration of Obama's time in office, Republicans voted close to 60 times to repeal the law, which was quickly dismissed by the president.

During the 2016 presidential election, all 16 GOP candidates vowed to take action if they were nominated and elected, with Donald Trump putting forward one of the more convincing arguments to the conservative voters. Despite his promise to repeal Obamacare, Trump has had little success, as the former host of "The Apprentice" has been unable to get his own Republican Party on the same page in regards to an alternative. However, Sen. Bill Cassidy and Sen. Lindsey Graham co-sponsored a bill that was put forward earlier this week, which came under fire by many in the media and the entire Democratic Party. In response, Trump came out with support of the bill on his Twitter account, but not after critics were quick to lash out on September 21.

Taking to his Twitter feed this week, Donald Trump praised Bill Cassidy for his vision on health care reform, while explaining why he went on to support the senator's bill.

"Senator (Doctor) Bill Cassidy is a class act who really cares about people and their Health(care), he doesn't lie-just wants to help people!" Trump tweeted out.

Not stopping there, Donald Trump went on to explain one reason why he gave his support to the GOP alternative in question.

"I would not sign Graham-Cassidy if it did not include coverage of pre-existing conditions. It does! A great Bill. Repeal & Replace," he posted.

Twitter reacts

In the day since Donald Trump's tweeted support for the Cassidy-Graham health care bill, those who oppose the contents of the legislation made sure to hit back in response. "The truth is, Graham-Cassidy not only fails the Jimmy Kimmel test—it also shreds your own promises. You said 'no one will lose coverage,'" Ben Wikler tweeted out, in reference to recent criticism by late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

"Wrong. Cassidy is a filthy disgusting liar who is paid for by special interests," one Twitter user wrote, while adding, "Listen to Jimmy Kimmel. He's got nothing to gain. Cassidy does." "Cassidy is just another fraud who wants to overturn everything that Obama did just like you," an additional tweet added.

"Dr.

Cassidy is violating his Hippocratic oath by pushing Deathcare on the American people," Eugene Gu MD tweeted out, which was followed by a response from writer Dani Bostick. "Trump is all bluster. He does not care about Americans' access to affordable, quality healthcare," Bostick added. The backlash continued as the rift between the political left and the right on the issue of health care doesn't look to be ending anytime soon.
