President Donald Trump won a popularity poll over Hillary Clinton. Just when you thought no one could possibly be any worse off than Trump in terms of public opinion, it's revealed that his former Democratic rival has him beat. What's that all about?

Clinton sinks in popularity

According to The Hill, a survey conducted by Bloomberg News reveals that 41 percent of Americans favor Trump, but Clinton only has a 39 percent favorable rating. 55 percent have an unfavorable view of Trump, but a staggering 55 percent feel the same way about Hillary Clinton.

The poll further shows that one-fifth of those who voted for Hillary in the 2016 election don't have a favorable view of her. Bloomberg's last poll was taken prior to the election and it revealed that a small 8 percent of those likely to vote for Clinton had an unfavorable view of her.

J. Ann Selzer oversaw the survey, observing that there's a broadening "discontent" for Hillary Clinton because she hasn't sought the spotlight. Selzer adds that it's not an indication of unfavorable views of the Democratic house since "numbers for other Democrats are good."

Clinton keeping her distance

Hillary Clinton by and large has stayed out of the spotlight since losing the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump.

She surfaces on occasion in discussion forums and rare personal interviews. She's reportedly aligning herself with the resistance against Trump, though she hasn't said much lately. The former Senator and Secretary of State admits there were mistakes made during the campaign, but had the election been on October 28, she would've been president.

Former FBI Director James Comey announced at that time that the investigation into her emails would be re-opened. Clinton holds Comey accountable to a significant degree for her loss against Trump.

Trump White House under scrutiny

For Donald Trump to beat Hillary Clinton in a popularity poll comes as a big surprise with the Russian scandal looming over his administration.

His senior advisor and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is being investigated for multiple business transactions after it was alleged that he wanted a secret communication system set up for the Trump campaign to interact with Russian officials. The most recent chapter in the saga involves Donald Trump, Jr. meeting with a Russian attorney linked to the Kremlin in an effort to get disparaging information on Hillary Clinton.
