As Donald Trump continues on during his first foreign trip as commander in chief, the president and his wife have had the pleasure of meeting several world leaders along the way. After the First Couple decided to tweet about their time in Italy, social media users were quick to offer their thoughts.

Trump in Italy

Over the last month, Donald Trump and his administration have been forced to deal with non-stop breaking news that continues to add fuel to the fire of speculation in regards to the growing scandal surrounding Russia and the country's impact on the 2016 presidential election.

While the former host of "The Apprentice" has denied any wrongdoing or ties between both side, internal reports from multiple government agencies, as well as many well-respected news outlets, have revealed links between Russia and those in or around the administration. In recent weeks, Trump was found to have shared classified information with a pair of Russian officials during a meeting at the White House, with son-in-law Jared Kushner now considered under "FBI scrutiny" due to his alleged knowledge of the Kremlin scandal. Add on the additional controversy surrounding the recent firing of former FBI Director James Comey, and Trump left a lot behind him as he departed the White House last week to embark on his trip.

As seen on Twitter on May 26, both the president and first lady decided to tweet about their latest stop in Italy, but it didn't go over well with social media critics.

Taking to Twitter on Friday afternoon, Melania Trump and Donald Trump appeared pleased with their visit in Italy.

"On behalf of @FLOTUS Melania and myself, thank you for a wonderful dinner and evening, President Sergio Mattarella," Trump tweeted out. In a follow-up post, Melania posted a picture of herself and the billionaire real estate mogul, while adding, "Gorgeous evening."

Twitter reacts

In response to the pair of tweets from Melania Trump and Donald Trump, Twitter users made sure to voice their opinion of the couple, and it wasn't a positive one.

"Did you push other leaders out of the way so you were first at the salad bar?" Tony Posnanski tweeted, while mockingly asking, "Did you make Macron get the meatloaf?"

"Who did you push out of your way in this picture?" Roland Scahill wrote on his Twitter account, before noting, "Looks like Merkel & Trudeau chose to be as far away from you as possible!" "On behalf of America, I would just like to say that you are a strange, strange man & an embarrassment to our country," another tweet went on to say about Donald Trump.

"You have turned your back on America. You're both are very selfish. You get to travel & enjoy healthcare while we have to earn everything," one Twitter user wrote back to Melania Trump. "I can teach you how to photo shop him out of the pictures that he keeps ruining. Make Photos Great Again," an additional tweet read. As the backlash continued, it was made clear that the political divide in the United States was not going to end anytime soon.
