Memorial Day of 2017 marks the first with Donald Trump in the White House. While the president received backlash from his critics during the holiday, his daughter Ivanka Trump also faced opposition.

Ivanka on Memorial Day

When Donald Trump first announced that he was running for president back in June 2015, his candidacy was first viewed as a joke by many Americans and mainstream media outlets. As time went on, the former host of "The Apprentice" picked up steam, as his controversial style and rhetoric connected with angry Americans who were tired of business as usual in Washington.

Trump went on to win the GOP nomination at the Republican National Convention, before pulling off the upset win over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton last November. With the billionaire real estate mogul now in the White House, many have wondered what role members of his family will have in the administration. Two names that have had the most impact have been son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is currently under FBI scrutiny for his potential knowledge of the growing Russian scandal, and daughter Ivanka Trump. Ivanka currently holds an adviser role with her father, and decided to tweet out a Memorial Day message on May 29.

Taking to Twitter on Monday afternoon, Ivanka Trump posted a short Memorial Day message to honor those who have given their lives for the United States.

"Today we honor the men & women in our armed forces who have lost their lives to protect our freedom," she tweeted, before adding, "Thank you for your service #MemorialDay."

Twitter reacts

Not long after Ivanka Trump sent out her Memorial Day message on Twitter, social media users were quick to fire back with criticism. "Btw, is your dad a vet?

Oh, that's right... he's a dodger," one tweet read.

"The "good gov't shut down" your dad wants leaves no $ to fly mothers to meet flag-draped coffins.

Actions NOT empty words. #TheResistance," one Twitter user wrote. "Yet your father's administration dishonors their memory with his shameful conduct. So, who do you mean by 'we'?" an additional tweet asked. "You, your husband, your father, you're all going to die in jail," one aggressive message replied back to Ivanka Trump.

"We've all had to apologize to our WWII vet dads for what your own dad, the draft dodger, is doing to the country," a follow-up tweet went on to say. As the backlash continued, it only highlighted the anger that those on the left have for Donald Trump and his entire family.
