After fours months on the job, Donald Trump gave his first commencement speech and decided to do it at a far-right wing Christian fundamentalist school. The president addressed those at the controversial Liberty University, which instantly caused a negative reaction across social media.

Twitter trolls Trump

When Donald Trump first announced that he was going to run for president, the reaction from most of the mainstream media and the American people was that it was nothing more than a joke candidacy which would soon fade out. As time went on, the former host of "The Apprentice" gained steam and rode his momentum to the Republican National Convention.

However, questions continued to be raised as to what support Trump would have from conservatives in the general election. In an attempt to close the gap, Trump found ways to appeal to various conservative voting blocs, including the religious right. Never known as a religious person before his campaign, Trump did his best to talk up his Christian beliefs, while once incorrectly quoting the Bible verse "Second Corinthians" as "two Corinthians." Despite this, Trump was able to gain enough support from the political right to win the election, leading to his speech at Liberty University on Saturday. In response, social media users didn't hold back their thoughts as their trolling of the president went viral on May 13.

"In America, we don’t worship government," Donald Trump said to the graduating class at Liberty University, before adding, "We worship God." Trump cited his recent executive order that supporters claim is about "religious freedom," while opponents say is more about tearing down the wall of separation between church and state by giving religious instantiations the right to be politically active while keeping their tax exempt status.

Not stopping there, Trump even went as far as bashing his political opponents. Attendance at the event was mandatory, with Trump doing his best to appeal to the Christian students and faculty.

Twitter reacts

In response to Donald Trump's speech at Liberty University, social media quickly went viral with its criticism.

"Shoutout to Liberty University for hosting a man who could care less about your school, graduates, or education in general. And religion," one Twitter user wrote.

"Students at Trump's Liberty University commencement address were mandated to attend.

So much for Liberty," another tweet pointed out. "Trump just read next year's football schedule to graduates at Liberty University... who will not be there for next year's football season," a tweet read.

"Liberty University will expel a woman for having pre-martial sex & being pregnant but invited a sexual predator to speak at commencement," an additional tweet pointed out about Donald Trump and his controversial history with women. The negative reaction continued, as it was clear that many Americans still don't side with the commander in chief.
