During the Texas Mile event that was held on March 26, 2017, at the Victoria Regional Airport in Texas, A 2006 Ford Gt was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 5.4-liter V8 engine with 45 psi of boost that was capable of delivering 2,500 horsepower. That was plenty enough to set a new world record for the standing mile by running at 293.6 mph that dominated every car at the event.
The modified Ford GT
The Ford supercar was fine-tuned by M2K Motorsports to provide five times the speed of what its stock engine could ever perform. Also, it boasts a high-performance Wilson intake manifold equipped with an air-to-ice intercooler and several more upgrades. The GT’s power all came from heavily modified internals but used its stock aerodynamic body to set the new record.
The Ford sports car broke a record set in 2012 by another GT that hit a top speed of 283.23 mph. This was held on the Space Shuttle landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Chief vehicle engineer Jamal Hameedi never expected the GT to run as fast as it did.
He had a vital role on the supercar’s record-breaking performance.
The next Texas Mile event
The Texas Mile event is held twice a year. This is where sports car enthusiasts can bring any car and see how their cars perform on a runway of over a mile long. The next event will be held in October of this year, and Kevin Kesterson of M2K Motorsports plans to return and take a crack at the 300 mph mark.
A 2017 Ford GT is now available for $450,000. It has a 657hp twin-turbocharged V6 that can reach a top speed of 216 mph. Hameedi was asked if this new supercar would ever chase speed records in the future, to which he replied that people might be less inclined due to its expensive price tag. However, he also stated that GTs are easy to tune and modify the engine, perhaps this will allow some people to make it faster if they could afford one.
