The 12-day Cannes Film Festival will begin on May 17 with its full grace. Director Thierry Fremaux says that the lineup includes several Amazon and Netflix projects. “The Beguiled,” “Okja," “Wonderstruck,” “The Meyerowitz Stories,” and “You Were Never Really Here” will compete for a Cannes prize. Cannes vet Michael Haneke, who won the award thrice before, is returning with “Le Redoubtable” and “Happy End.”

‘The Beguiled’ – “The Beguiled” is directed and co-produced by Sofia Coppola. It features Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell.

Sofia has teamed up with Amazon for this upcoming film. “The Beguiled” will compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. The movie will hit a theater near you this June.

‘Okja’ – “Okja” is a South Korean movie co-produced and directed by none other than Bong Joon-ho. Jon Ronson has penned its script, and the cast includes Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Ahn Seo-hyun, Lily Collins, Tilda Swinton, Shirley Henderson and Jake Gyllenhaal.

‘The Meyerowitz Stories’ – The story of this film is about a pregnant woman who is forced to work in an office as her husband has no money to run the family. The project is directed by Noah Baumbach and features Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler in the lead roles.

This movie has been selected from over 15,00 entries for a Cannes prize. In March 2017, Amazon acquired the US distribution rights.

Netflix projects at Cannes

‘Wonderstruck’ – The main event will premiere Netflix’s “Wonderstruck.” This upcoming movie is directed and co-produced by Todd Haynes. The story is based on a novel of the same name by Brian Selznick.

Oakes Fegley, Michelle Williams, Millicent Simmonds, Julianne Moore and James Urbaniak are in the lead roles. The movie is about Rose (Millicent Simmonds) who escapes from a prison and tries to live a normal life, but Ben (Oakes Fegley) lets the cops know about her presence in New York City. FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales on the film.

‘You Were Never Really Here’ – This British-American movie is directed and written by Lynne Ramsay. The story is inspired by the book of the same name by Jonathan Ames. Joaquin Phoenix is on board to play the leading role. “You Were Never Really Here” is about a former police officer who tries to save a young girl from a sex trafficking gang. Alessandro Nivola plays Senator Williams in this movie, and John Doman appears as John McClean.

The lineup also includes “Good Time,” “Happy End,” “The Day After,” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” The fest will include a total of nineteen titles, four midnight screenings, and two special screenings. These projects have been chosen from thousands of submissions from over 150 countries worldwide.
