It’s not at all uncommon to hear people talk about using Uber (as a matter of fact, you’re probably destined to use one this coming New Year’s Eve.) The holidays are here so there is a large demand for the service. In most cases, #Uber just makes sense. You open your app, you set your pickup location, you request your Uber, and you get picked up usually within a few minutes. The concept is pretty simple and super convenient.

I want to take a few minutes to talk about the people behind that Uber wheel--your Uber drivers. These guys and gals spend hours (sometimes all day!) driving people around, getting them to the places they need to be.

The movies, dinner reservations, clubs, parties, aunt Pat’s house...it doesn’t matter where you need to go, Uber drivers are there to take you from point A to point B.

But what goes on in the minds of our beloved chauffeurs during your time spent together? Well, I’ll tell you because I happen to be a driver for Uber, and I thought it would be interesting to share with you a few things that I wish my riders knew every time they request an Uber.

Yes, most of us do more than just drive for Uber to make money

While it’s absolutely possible to take on Uber full-time and make a full-time income (if you really hustle), most drivers usually have another job besides Uber. I, for instance, am a freelance writer. Uber helps me make money between gigs!

No, we don’t know where you’re going when we accept your request

Unfortunately, we don’t know where you’re going until we pick you up.

This means we literally have no idea how long (or short) our time spent together will be. Please don’t be upset if your driver shows, only to decline your fare because your destination is 3 hours away (and yes, we do get surprised with fares that long every now and then).

Yes, we sometimes have trouble finding you, and we sincerely apologize for that

Depending on where you make your request and set up your pickup location, we may end up having a little trouble finding you right away. I find it difficult to find my riders, particularly when they put in a request where vehicles aren’t usually permitted (hotel rooms, in the middle of an amusement park, in the very back of an apartment complex). As much as we all understand that you want your us to arrive ASAP, please keep in mind that we might end up picking you up quicker if you wait until you’re in the exact spot we’ll be picking you up.

No, tips are not included in the fare

Uber drivers often go without getting tipped for their service.

This is because unlike our competitors like Lyft, the Uber platform doesn’t prompt you as the rider to leave us a tip at the end of your ride. And it definitely doesn’t automatically include any kind of gratuity.

We love conversation, but we also need to focus on the road

Most of us really enjoy holding great conversations with our riders. As a matter of fact, a lot of us usually initiate a conversation the second you enter our vehicles. We only ask that you keep in mind that both your safety and our own, is our main priority and that you don’t become offended when we seem quiet during our ride together. It’s nothing personal. We promise.

We can’t be requested by name

As much as I’d love for some of my riders to be able to request me as their driver for future rides, that isn’t an option just yet with Uber (fingers crossed that it might someday happen, though). Uber’s goal is to match you with a driver that’s nearest to your location at the time of your Uber request. This is so that you can get to where you need to be as quickly as possible. Uber just doesn’t like the idea of its guests having to wait around for a driver.
