Girl in the Box premieres on Lifetime on Saturday, September 10. The psychological movie is based on true events that happened from 1977 to 1984. The Lifetime movie is not the first time Collen Stan's story has been told. Two books have been written about the account, as well as many #Television documentaries and episodes on Criminal Minds, Law and Order: SVU, and several other crime series.  A song and even an opera render the details of what happened while the 22-year-old woman was held as a sex slave for seven years. What happened to Stan made international headlines. She became known as the "girl in the box" because she was made to live in a literal box most of the time she was in captivity.

'Girl in the Box' real life events

Colleen Stan was kidnapped, tortured, raped, and locked in a box for up to 23 hours a day.

The young woman stated in many interviews after her escape that she was an experienced hitchhiker. It was on May 19, 1977 that she was hitchhiking to a friend's birthday party when her luck changed. She had let two cars go past before she felt confident enough to get into the blue van with a male driver, his wife and baby. Life for Stan changed that day for the next seven years.

In January 1978, she was forced to sign a contract giving herself over to Cameron to be his slave for life. She was told if she didn't do it, her family would be harmed. She was not allowed to talk without permission. The young woman was kept in a wooden box under the couple's water bed. She was in the box under the bed when the wife gave birth to a second child in the bed above her. The story gets to be real interesting because Stan was allowed to visit her family without her captors in 1981.

She was allowed to work in a hotel as a maid. It wasn't until 1984 that she had the nerve to leave. Even when she went home, she did not call the police. It was three months later that Cameron's wife reported her husband.

The girl in the box's captors

Cameron Hooker, now 61, was the girl's captor along with his wife, Janice. Cameron was sentenced to a 104-year prison term in 1985 for the kidnapping, torture, and rape of Colleen. He was not eligible for parole until 2023, but under California's Elderly Parole Program his hearing date was moved up seven years to 2015. On April 16, 2015, Hooker's first request for parole was denied. He won't be eligible again for another hearing until 2030. Janice Hooker testified against her husband, and she was granted full immunity.

Life today for the girl in the box

Stan picked up the pieces of her life and moved on. She received an accounting degree, got married, and had a daughter. Because of her ordeal, she also joined an organization to help abused women.

She and Janice changed their last names, but they didn't move out of California. Collen's character is played by 25-year-old Addison Timlin. Cameron Hooker is played by 29-year-old Canadian actor Zane Holtz. Zelda Williams, 27, daughter of the late Robin Williams, plays the part of Janice Hooker. Watch the two-hour movie on September 10 at 10 p.m. When the movie is over, don't turn the channel because a documentary entitled, "Colleen Stan: The Girl in the Box" will follow the movie. #Movies #MovieReview
