"The #Game Awards" 2017 nominations were announced earlier [VIDEO] today by the ceremony's executive producer himself, Geoff Keighley. The twenty-six awards being presented this year seems like a fair amount for the absolute best games to win a least one trophy but the competition is fierce this time around. An amazing year in gaming makes for an interesting award show as the anticipation to find out who the recipient of the "Game of the Year" award will be intensifies.

To objectively recognize the finest works in a sea of exceptional ones is a daunting task for any committee assembled within an industry so it's only right to have the people decide.

The games that were expected to sweep up every award show received a great amount of nods in various categories. "Destiny 2," "Horizon: Zero Dawn," "Super Mario Odyssey," and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" all sit pretty with a whopping 6 nominations each. A couple exclusives from Xbox made it, such as "Cuphead" and "Forza," but the list is dominated by Nintendo and Playstation games.

The Nintendo Switch, which has only been out for 8 months, managed to get nods for six different games, five of them appearing at least twice. That's impressive. Handheld and mobile category included, Nintendo is guaranteed to take home a load of accolades, but who will win Game of the Year? The big question everyone is asking will be answered in 3 weeks.

#The Game Awards air Thursday, December 7.
