The internet is a powerful thing. Almost immediately following her inspiring speech at the Golden Globe Awards, a surge of tweets flooded the web supporting Oprah and calling for her to run for president. On the evening of Sunday, January 7, 2018, the annual Golden Globe Awards were held in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony dates back to 1944 and bestows prestigious awards to the best in Hollywood. One of the attendees, Oprah Winfrey, won the Cecil B. DeMille award, and, like others, came to the stage to deliver an acceptance speech.

Her incredible speech

Her speech was not an ordinary one which usually consists of thanking family and friends. Instead, Oprah began detailing the experience of witnessing Sidney Poitier win the Cecil B. DeMille award on television in 1982. She felt honored to be the first black woman in history to be given that same award, saying how it was a dream of hers.

She continued her speech by saying, “I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.” This may have also been inspired by the recent Hollywood actresses that have come out publicly, detailing stories of abuse.

People were so touched by her speech that hashtags such as #Oprah2020 and #Oprahforpresident began to trend. While she claimed that she originally did not intend to run for president, she told CNN the next day she was considering it. Even Donald Trump said the following about her in the past, “She’s popular, she’s brilliant, she’s a wonderful woman … That would be a pretty good ticket."

Oprah's philanthropy

There is no denying the incredible amount of philanthropy work that Oprah Winfrey has done for the world.

The following are just a few of the dozens of charities she’s been involved with:

  • Free The Children
  • Red Cross
  • Peace Over Violence
  • UNICEF
  • Joining Forces
  • Clinton Foundation

She also helps support causes including child adoption, civil rights, human rights, LGBT rights, literacy, fighting against human trafficking, women’s rights and more.

Oprah even owns her own charities which consist of The Angel Network, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, and The Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation.

While the 2020 election is still some time away, it’s impressive to see how quickly support can rally for a candidate. Regardless of your political standing, it’s difficult to argue that Oprah doesn’t have the potential to be a great president. As it is only an idea for the time being, we will ultimately see if she decides to run when election season arrives.
