Conjunctivitis, also named as pinkeye, is an inflammation of connective tissues. The disease is caused by attacks of harmful viruses, bacteria (gonorrhea, chlamydia), irritants (dirt particles, smoke, shampoos), and allergies (pollen, dust). The microorganisms have the ability to transmit conjunctivitis from one individual to another. This is why it should be prevented as early as possible before the disease gets transmitted to our children.

The most common symptoms are red spots around the eyes or inner eyelids, yellow-colored discharge that crusts over the eyelashes, itchy eyes, burning sensation, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light.

Though few medicines and therapies are available to cure the illness, the following home remedies have no alternative.

Breast milk

If your infant is suffering from conjunctivitis, get it breastmilk in excess. A study published in the Journal of Medicines proves that breastmilk is a perfect food for newborns, and helps fight eye infections. It contains loads of nutrients, such as calcium, proteins, iron, minerals, and vitamins – all these nutrients are beneficial for your child. Plus, breast milk has various antibodies, particularly, immunoglobulin E that cures and combats conjunctivitis resulting from allergic reactions.

Boric acid

Boric Acid works as an efficient and one of the most powerful remedies to treat conjunctivitis.

It is useful for all kinds of eye and ear infections, including pink eyes and deafness. Boric acid has potent antifungal and antibacterial properties, and help deal with the causes of infections. Plus, it prevents burning sensation, watery discharge, stomach acidity, and other similar complications. Mix two tablespoons of raw boric acid and one glass of filtered water.

Stir for a few minutes, and pour the solution into a glass dropper bottle. Put two to three drops of the solution in each eye, and repeat the process thrice per day. Make sure you have consulted your doctor before using boric acid at home.

Coconut oil

Coconut Oil is one of the best and most important remedies to treat conjunctivitis.

It helps unblock the blocked tear ducts and has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. Regular use of coconut oil boosts the immunity and is good for human health. The oil helps fight the harmful viruses and bacteria that cause the illness.

Take a few drops of coconut oil, and gently massage the nasal area and eye using your fingertips. Repeat the process three times a day or until you see improvements. Warm up the mixture of coconut oil and almond oil for better results. The hot oil may not be suitable for children, so you must consult your doctor before trying it at home.
